Abbas Hyderi, vice dean for education, School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, is the new chair of the inaugural steering committee for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Medical Education Leadership and Administration Group as of July 1, 2026.
The AAMC Medical Education Leadership and Administration Group unites faculty and staff professionals who oversee and facilitate functions of the medical education mission. The group focuses on areas such as accreditation, program management, regional campus leadership, policy development and learner services across the range of undergraduate and graduate medical education, as well as continuing medical education.
“This is an exciting moment for academic medicine, as we work to strengthen collaboration across the continuum of medical education,” Hyderi says. “I look forward to partnering with colleagues across the country to help shape innovative approaches that prepare the next generation of physicians for the future of health care.”
Hyderi joined the Pitt School of Medicine on Nov. 1, 2024. In his role, he oversees accreditation and continuous quality improvement, admissions and financial aid, bioethics and humanism, graduate and medical education, global health and international experiences, medical student research, student enrichment and engagement, and student affairs. In 2024, he received the prestigious AAMC Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award for outstanding contributions to medical education by gifted teachers.
