Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer Honors Pitt Researchers

Several researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center are receiving prestigious awards this year from the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC). Olivera (Olja) Finn, Distinguished Professor of Immunology and professor of surgery, and John Kirkwood, Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Sandra and Thomas Usher Professor of Melanoma, are both receiving the Martin “Mac” Cheever Distinguished Service Award for their work in promoting cancer immunotherapy and improving patient outcomes through advancing science.

Tullia Bruno, assistant professor of immunology, School of Medicine; Michael Lotze, professor of surgery and of immunology, School of Medicine, and of bioengineering, Swanson School of Engineering; and Kirkwood will receive the Champion of SITC Awards for their contribution to SITC’s mission through education, advocacy and leadership development.

Researchers at Pitt and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center have played a vital role in advancing immunotherapy for cancer care and continue to build on these institutions’ strong three-decade legacy in the field.

The awards will be presented at the society’s annual meeting in November, marking its 40th anniversary.
