Rare Diseases Nonprofit Honors José-Alain Sahel


José-Alain Sahel, Distinguished Professor and Eye and Ear Foundation Professor and chair, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will be the 2024 EURORDIS Scientific Award recipient, the nonprofit EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe announced January 18, 2024.

EURORDIS, an alliance of more than 1,000 organizations for patients with rare diseases from 74 countries, will present the award in February at its annual event in Belgium.

The selection committee chose Sahel for his demonstrated excellence in research on retinal diseases, development of new treatments, and collaboration with colleagues throughout the international medical, scientific and biotechnology communities to improve the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for patients with rare eye diseases.

As one of the world’s top experts in retinal diseases, including inherited conditions like retinitis pigmentosa, Sahel has spent his career in pursuit of new and better therapies to preserve and restore vision.
