Health Sciences Ombuds Office
We provide students and postdoctoral trainees with an informal, confidential, neutral and independent resource to address concerns or questions openly, without fear of retaliation or judgment.
The Ombuds Office provides confidential, off-the-record support to help individuals navigate concerns without fear of retaliation or triggering formal action. These conversations can surface systemic issues, such as unethical behavior or policy gaps, and contribute to a healthier, more effective learning environment.
Our Core Principles
Confidential
Confidentiality helps create a safe place in which visitors can talk through their concerns. We will not share the identity of a visitor or any information provided by the visitor without their permission. The only exceptions are when we believe that disclosure is necessary to address imminent risk of serious harm, Title IX violations or disclosure of a crime. The Health Sciences Ombuds Office does not maintain records that identify visitors to the office.
Neutral
We advocate for fair processes and their implementation, consider the rights and interests of all parties, and do not take sides for or against any individual, cause or position.
Informal
We are an off-the-record, voluntary resource. The Health Sciences Ombuds Office does not conduct formal investigations, participate in disciplinary procedures, or make decisions about cases. It also cannot alter, override or enforce any rules, policies or administrative actions. Contacting the Health Sciences Ombuds Office does not provide notice to the University. If a visitor wishes to make a formal complaint, the ombuds can provide information on the procedures.
Independent
Except for administrative and budgetary purposes, the Health Sciences Ombuds Office operates independently of existing administrative structures and processes and has the autonomy to carry out responsibilities without influence from University administration.
