The American Pediatric Society (APS) announced on Nov. 11, 2025, the election of three University of Pittsburgh faculty members to its Class of 2026: Judith M. Martin, Richard Saladino and Nader Shaikh.
Founded in 1888, the APS is North America’s first and most distinguished academic pediatric organization. Membership in the APS is among the highest honors in academic pediatrics, recognizing physicians who have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of child and adolescent health through research, education, clinical care and advocacy.
Judith Martin, professor of pediatrics, School of Medicine, conducts research on common pediatric infectious diseases and evaluating the effectiveness of vaccines and treatments. She is also executive vice chair of the Human Research Protection Office.
Richard Saladino, professor of pediatrics and senior associate vice chair for faculty development in the Department of Pediatrics, focuses on animal models of infection, which have contributed to the development of a vaccine widely used to protect children from Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria.
Nader Shaikh, professor of pediatrics, School of Medicine, and of clinical and translational science, focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of frequently occurring childhood infections, especially urinary tract infection, otitis media and sinusitis.
Election to the APS reflects the national recognition of their achievements and underscores Pitt’s continued leadership in academic pediatrics. New members will be formally recognized at the 2026 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in Boston, April 24–27, 2026.
The University congratulates Martin, Saladino and Shaikh for their accomplishments and for their enduring commitment to improving children’s health through excellence in care, research and education.
