Name of Program: The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Summer Premedical Academic Enrichment Program (SPAEP) - For Level II Participants

Application Dates: The application process for SPAEP will officially open online December 1, 2015 and will close February 29, 2016 at 11:59 pm.
Program Start and End Dates: June 6, 2016 through July 22, 2016 (Participants are expected to arrive to the University of Pittsburgh main campus on Sunday, June 5, 2016 and depart Saturday, July 23, 2016).
Who Should Apply: This program is open to individuals who are entering their junior and senior year of college. Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the program.
LEVEL II Program Overview: The Level II program is designed for students who are entering their junior or senior year of college. This highly competitive summer research program pairs talented undergraduates with biomedical researchers in a variety of areas. Participants will gain exposure to the real world of medicine through clinical medicine. The program also provides interactions with highly experienced and expert clinicians who are committed to enriching the academic and clinical training environment, exposure to the university and hospital facilities and brown bag seminars. In addition to a 32 hour per week schedule, Level II students participate in a medical school admissions preparation seminar, physician shadowing and MCAT preparation, academic enrichment skills sessions which includes personal statement design, test taking, stress management, learning skills and simulated medical school interviews. The program strives to enhance and improve participantís chances of becoming successful applicants for any health science school.
SPAEP targets students who have been traditionally underrepresented in medicine.
Level II Program Requirements:
Level II applicants must have a proven record of organic chemistry as part of their academic objective and must have completed coursework in this study before the start of the program along with a completed science GPA.
Applicants must complete a personal statement (word count of 1500 characters including spacing). Personal statements should provide a relevant description of the desire to study medicine and a clearly defined expectation of what one hopes to gain from being involved in SPAEP.
Applicants must provide a copy of their current transcript (transcripts can be unofficial) and two letters of recommendation from faculty and/or an academic counselor from their current institution. Applicants should also provide a listing of any research, shadowing and volunteering experiences that have been acquired.
Stipend: Participants are provided $1000 for their involvement in the program. Distribution of funds will be made in two equal parts. Half of the stipend will be disbursed in June and the other half will be disbursed at the end of the program in July.
Travel Assistance: Travel assistance is provided to students who live outside of the Southwestern, Pennsylvania area.
Housing: Participants will reside on the University of Pittsburgh main campus in a fully air-conditioned dormitory. The dormitory is co-ed, but men and women are on separate floors. A student coordinator (SC) will also reside in the dormitory with SPAEP participants for the duration of the seven week program. Students will be placed in double room accommodations or in a suite that can occupy up to four persons.
Meals: Meal tickets are provided as part of the program.
Health Insurance: Applicants must submit proof of health insurance for participation.
Health Record Information: Applicants must provide updated health record information to participate in the program prior to the start of the program.
Citizenship Status: Applicants must provide proof of US citizenship or permanent resident status.
