The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) offers a centrally governed, integrated, inter-disciplinary curriculum that emphasizes problem-solving and self-directed learning. Courses meeting the degree requirements for the First Professional Medicine Program are available to those students who have been selected by the school's admission committee. There are opportunities for students who have completed their core clinical training at their home school to apply for an elective experience at UPSOM.
The official grading structure of the school is five-level: Honors, High Satisfactory, Satisfactory, Low Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory. The first two years of the curriculum are graded as Honors/Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory and the second two years use the five-level grading scheme. This grading structure is recorded on both the University transcript and internal documentation.
