They were focused on making sure I got through that experience without having extra stress of medical school.

My sister had emergency brain surgery last year in January. My mom called me on a Thursday night and said she and my dad were flying to New Mexico. I was an absolute wreck — we were having an exam the next week and I thought my sister was going to die. I couldn’t do anything. I just sat all day long and cried in lecture because I didn’t want to be at home so I came to school.

My friends here were great. Even though we had an exam coming up they came over for the night and waited with me to get the phone call from my parents. I went and spoke with Dr. Kanter and Dr. Harvey and they both said, “hey, if you can’t take the test, don’t take the test. If you need help with course work, let us know.” They were so focused on making sure I got through it all, but making sure that I got through that experience without having extra stress of medical school.

My friends in PBL gave me all the support that I needed by trying to teach me all the stuff that I didn’t pay attention to all week because I couldn’t concentrate before the exam. People here, students and faculty, are very helpful in general. My sister is fine by the way.
