HOUSING/OFF CAMPUS LIVING
|
Off-Campus Living is dedicated to providing University of Pittsburgh students with the necessary information and tools to successfully reside in off–campus accommodations. We provide an informative Renters' Guide, apartment listings and neighborhood descriptions, and a roommate and subletting service, as well as other useful tips and contact information to assist you in your role as tenant. Please visit our Web site at www.ocl.pitt.edu for complete information, or stop in our office at 127 N. Bellefield Avenue
Many medical students live in apartments or share houses in the Oakland, Squirrel Hill and Shadyside areas of Pittsburgh.
The following suggestions may be helpful. "Your budget is the chief determinant of what you will finally end up getting. With all rented accommodations, it is necessary to check carefully on the hidden costs. If the rent includes utilities, you have saved yourself a little headache. However, some landlords advertise cheaper apartments but then utilities are considered extra. If the bathroom is shared with other tenants and if you are to pay utilities, it is best to find out the arrangement about paying for the water heating. Same stands for other utilities...Before signing a lease, read it carefully--ONCE YOU PUT YOUR SIGNATURE TO IT YOU CANNOT GET OUT OF IT EASILY. Most real estate leases become valid three (3) days after they are signed. It may be worth your while to get leases examined by somebody who knows the details.
The Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the campus newspaper are obvious sources for housing information. These papers carry classified advertisement sections giving the details about efficiencies and one, two or more bedroom apartments. An efficiency apartment is a large room which includes a sink, stove, refrigerator, etc. If furnished, the bed, a few chairs, a dresser and a study desk are usually included.
Last, but perhaps the best compromise, is to share an apartment or a house with other people. Another method of going about looking for apartments is to go through a real estate management agency.
The standard security deposit is one month's rent, which is kept as a security for the upkeep of the place. If you don't break or damage anything, it is returned when you leave. It is beneficial to check out the distances and location of the nearest grocery store, drug store, post office and Laundromat. You will soon realize the advantages of having these close, especially if you don't own a car. If you own a car, it is possible that you will need a parking place. To avoid useless hassles, find out the parking arrangement before signing the lease (most areas in Oakland are now permit parking only).
There are several St. Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army and Goodwill Stores that have
used furniture -- proceeds from which go to rehabilitation efforts or to the poor. A
complete listing of these stores can be found in the white pages. Often the Sunday Pittsburgh
Press carries a section on garage sales. A list of some real estate agencies that
operate in the Oakland area may be found by referring the "Students Survival
Guide".

TRANSPORTATION |
The Port Authority Transit (PAT) has frequent buses from Oakland to the Downtown area. Buses can be boarded along Fifth & Forbes Avenues. Exact change is required. Any 61 or 71 bus will take you into downtown. For more information access their website.

The student lounge is located on the 2nd floor and is available to medical students
twenty-four (24) hours a day. It provides a place for meetings, conversation or a place to
nap when necessary. Each student is assigned a card key for entry into the lounge and a
mailbox. It's your lounge--enjoy it--but help keep it clean!
If you lose your key or have problems with them, please notify the Office of

The School of Medicine has instituted a student interview program whereby prospective applicants to the Medical School are interviewed by both a faculty member and a first and third year medical student. Any student in the second term who is interested in conducting interviews will be asked to express this interest to a representative from his/her class, as chosen by the Admissions Committee. The interviews are generally held from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Lost and Found for all of Scaife Hall is located on the third floor of Scaife Hall in the Security Office. Anyone finding or losing an item in Scaife Hall may check there during office hours.

Cost per card is $1.00 for the card and seven (7) copies. The card may then be re-encoded by putting in another $1.00 (or more). Each dollar added will give you fifteen (15) more copy credits. If coins are used, the cost is $.10 per copy. There are also several off-campus independent copy services available to students.

Murmurs is the Literature and Art Magazine publication of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine produced by an editorial staff composed of medical students. Its purpose is to provide both the students and faculty of the Medical School with an outlet for self-expression and creativity. Editorials, articles, announcements, communications, professional and academic announcements, creative writing (both prose and poetry), photography and pen and ink work may be submitted. Refer to the website for instructions on submitting items for publication. http://zone.medschool.pitt.edu/sites/BLAH/default.aspx

health insurance coverage. If you have any questions regarding the policy and/or
coverage contact the Office of Student Affairs, S532 Scaife Hall. There is a link for UPMC

The Counseling Program at the School of Medicine was started in 1980 and offers medical students evaluation, treatment and referral for a wide range of psychological needs. The program is dedicated to maintaining healthy and confident students and is both free of charge and highly confidential. A student using the program can be assured that no information shared in counseling is ever available to others without expressed permission of the student.
Medical training is an exciting but sometimes stressful process. Students may experience depression, anxiety, loss of confidence, sleep difficulties, relationship problems, eating problems, substance abuse, etc. These difficulties can interfere with academic performance and this often increases distress. It is hoped that if any such problems arise, students will contact the counseling program as soon as possible to avoid more serious problems from developing.
Lee Wolfson, M.Ed. is the medical school psychologist. His office is
located at 3520 Fifth Avenue, a short walking distance from Scaife Hall and he can be
reached at 624-1041. If he is there, and not meeting with a student,
he will talk to you. If not, leave a message and he will get back to you as soon
as possible. Please advise him whether he can leave a message for you with a
roommate or family member. Mr. Wolfson can also be reached via e-mail at lkw2@pitt.edu
