How do I pay for medical school?

We understand the obstacles faced by anyone considering medical school. We take a personal interest in helping all accepted candidates locate sources of funding for your education. We’ll stay with you every step of the way to explore every financing option.
Below is a list of loan, scholarship and grant opportunities available to minority students. Click here (Office of Financial Aid) for a complete overview of the admissions and financial aid process, including how to obtain the required Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Privately Funded Scholarships and Aid
National Medical Fellowship (NMF) Scholarship applicants
must be US citizens in one of the following minority groups as defined by the NMF: African-American,
Mexican American, Native-American or mainland Puerto Rican. NMF is a nonprofit organization that
provides grants-in-aid for first and second year students judged by NMF to be in need of financial
assistance. The deadline for filing NMF applications for entering students is August 31.
Announcements of awards are made by late October of each academic year. Applications may be obtained
from: National Medical Fellowships, Inc., 110 West 32nd Street, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10001,
or at www.nmfonline.org.
Negro Educational Emergency Drive (NEED) Scholarships are awarded to minority residents (minimum one year of current residency) of the following Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Washington or Westmoreland. Awards range from $100 to $1,000 per year. Applications can be obtained in writing from NEED, Midtown Towers, 643 Liberty Avenue, 17th Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or by calling (412)-566-2760, or at www.needld.org.
The NEED Emergency Loan Fund is a no interest, short-term, 90-day loan fund established to aid minority students in need of funds on an emergency basis. Application information is available from the Office of Financial Aid.
Black Scholarship Initiative (BSI), funded by alumni and NEED, provides financial assistance to African-American medical students based on high academic achievement in undergraduate study.
The Medical Alumni Scholarship is a four-year, $7,500 scholarship awarded every year to three freshmen from Pennsylvania with exceptional academic qualifications.
The Dr. Chester E. Harris Medical Student Award is presented to a junior medical student who has achieved academic excellence and provided outstanding service to the community and to humanity.
The Gateway Medical Society Award is presented to a student who has achieved academic excellence during his or her training at the medical school.
The Chi Delta Mu Award is presented to a student who has performed outstanding community service during his or her medical training.
