The Case for Scholarships

Committed to Scholarship Support

Remember how simultaneously grueling and exhilarating medical school was? Intensive exams, exciting research breakthroughs, expensive textbooks and cheap dinners? For today’s University of Pittsburgh medical student, some things have changed.

The cost of attending the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is now 20 times more than it was 30 years ago. The average Pitt medical student graduates with more than $125,000 of debt. Year-round curriculum demands make it difficult to secure part-time work. So to make ends meet, some students avoid buying textbooks, opting to share with others or borrow from the library. Other students just never apply, choosing instead a more lucrative career with less debt.

Cost of Attendance  2004-2005
In-State Out-of-State
Tuition $30,684 $36,594
Fees $600 $600
Health/Dental Insurance $2,250 $2,250
Books/Equip./Supplies $2,000 $2,000

Living Expenses $14,010 $14,010
Loan Fees $1,510 $1,688
Total $51,054 $57,142
Students who do apply often choose a medical school based solely on the amount of aid they receive. During one of the most exciting times in medical history, the University of Pittsburgh cannot afford to lose the brightest students to peer institutions. We must increase scholarship support to a level that is competitive with that offered by our peer institutions to give Pitt the advantage in student recruitment.

We invite you to help us lessen the significant financial burden of today’s Pitt med student by providing scholarship support. With your support, we will continue to recruit students who will lead us into the next era of medicine and retain our position as one of the nation’s leading medical schools.
