Richard Paul (MED '61)
No one can say the School of Medicine Class of '61 doesn't appreciate a party. Every five years, a significant number of classmates return to Pittsburgh for the '61 reunion. It could be the good parties—their 40th reunion was a riverboat cruise; the good planning—Richard Paul with a team of classmates has been helping plan the reunions for decades; or the good music—Richard's Dixieland Band played at the last reunion.
But Richard thinks it's something a little more altruistic—good friends and a great deal of pride in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
According to Richard, it's a particular point of pride that two classmates—James Corrigan and Paul Chervenick—have been honored with the prestigious Philip S. Hench Distinguished Alumnus Award, presented by the Medical Alumni Association every spring.
"There's a great deal of pride that two from our class have won that prestigious honor," he said. "And that helps keep classmates active in reunions and fundraising endeavors."
Richard would know. He's been involved in both—fundraising and
reunions—since 1967, when he returned to Pittsburgh from practicing
in Alaska. Richard worked in pediatrics in Pittsburgh and taught third-year
Pitt medical students during pediatric rotations until he retired in 2000.
He now works part time as medical director of quality assurance at Children's
Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. His part-time status leaves him more time
to volunteer as a fundraiser for the School of Medicine, something he
does gladly.
"I think the School of Medicine afforded me an excellent education, exposing me to memorable teachers who were also excellent clinicians conducting important and serious research," he said. "I felt very lucky and honored to be admitted to Harvard University as an undergraduate and very fortunate to have gotten an equally outstanding education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine." |
