Jack Douglas Smith
Jack Douglas Smith realizes time has its advantages. Since he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, his appreciation of his education has increased steadily.
"When I began my residency, I realized for the first time how thoroughly prepared I had been. Now, the longer I'm out, the more respect I have for the University," he said.
As his respect increases, so does his involvement. Jack opened his own
orthopaedic surgery practice in Greensburg, Pa., in 1978 and today juggles
his successful practice, a family, and volunteer work for the University.
Jack keeps in close contact with his School of Medicine classmates and attends reunions. Five years ago, he began serving as chair of the orthopaedic alumni for the School of Medicine. Since that time, the group has presented graduation gifts to orthopaedic students and awarded prizes that allow students to present research papers at other universities. The group has also applied for grants to support the student-published orthopaedic journal.
He is a member of Team Pittsburgh, a committee of donors that helps fund
athletic scholarships and attracts athletic donors to the University.
He is also a huge Pitt fan who regularly attends athletic functions, and
is a member of the Alumni Leadership Council.
"I'm getting to the point in my career where I can be a little more involved in things, and Pitt is a great institution that I'm happy to support," he said.
