Medical Alumni AssociationHistoryEach year, graduates of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine are inducted as members of the Medical Alumni Association, an organization with more than 6,000 members worldwide. The association was organized in 1886 and today continues to promote active involvement of alumni in the life of the school, and to enrich the lives of students through programs, projects, and awards. When the University of Pittsburgh acquired the medical college in 1905, the Medical Alumni Association voted to join the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association while retaining its individuality through separate leadership. The dean of the School of Medicine works in conjunction with an executive director—elected from among the alumni body’s prominent senior physicians—to advance medical education through an enthusiastic and active alumni membership. Susan Dunmire, MD '85, is the executive director, following the retirement of Executive Director Ross H. Musgrave, MD. He was preceded in this position by fellow senior physician alumni George H. Fetterman, MD, and Paul C. Gaffney, MD. Gifts from alumni provide support for scholarships, research projects, a low-interest loan fund, summer work experiences, and social events for current medical students. The MAA also builds and supports traditions at the School of Medicine—such as Scope and Scalpel, the annual play produced by graduating seniors, and The White Coat Ceremony, the welcome for incoming students each August. The MAA inducts graduates into the association at the senior luncheon and annual meeting in May. BoardMedical Alumni Association
