Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
The Admissions and Financial Aid Office is responsible for administering all financial aid and admission for the doctor of medicine degree. Information on how to apply to medical school, required courses, as well as admission and financial aid deadlines can be found on this site.
Office of Diversity Programs
The Office of Student Affairs/Diversity Programs exists to recruit and retain diverse body of medical students. Premedical enrichment and other support programs are just a few of the services offered by the staff in pursuit of our goal of ensuring student success.
Office of Faculty Affairs
The Office of Faculty Affairs is responsible for issues relating to School of Medicine faculty, including the development and interpretation of policies and procedures; recruitment, promotion, and tenure; faculty and chair orientation, counseling, and mediation; faculty development and governance; grievance and appeal procedures; and contractual, compensation, and legal issues. The office oversees standing committee operations, payroll and human resources functions, faculty performance evaluation, endowed chairs and professorships; statistical reporting, and serves as a liaison to the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Chancellor, Office of Legal Counsel, the University of Pittsburgh Physicians, and UPMC.
Office of Graduate Studies
The Graduate Studies Office administers the following academic degree-granting programs: Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program (PhD), Biomedical Informatics Program (PhD, MSc) and Clinical Research Training Program (MSc), Clinician Educator Training Program (PhD), Molecular Biophysics and Structural Biology Program (PhD), Computational Biology Program (PhD), and Program in Integrative Molecular Biology (PhD).
Medical Alumni Office
It is not unusual to see medical students and alums sharing news, stories, or personal experiences. The friendship and caring that alums offer to students helps make this medical school the special place that it is. One of the primary purposes of the Medical Alumni Association is to support current medical students to prepare them for their future careers as physicians and loyal alums. The organization also organizes reunions and plans local and regional events to keep alumni informed and connected to the School of Medicine.
Office of Medical Education
The Office of Medical Education (OMED) pursues teaching, research, and service missions related to the education of medical students. OMED offers a broad range of services to students and faculty, including academic development for students, instructional support for courses and clerkships, facilities management, course and faculty evaluation, informatics and informational technology support for instructional units, faculty development, program evaluation, testing services, and individual consultation. OMED develops new educational and curricular initiatives in conjunction with the Curriculum Committee and conducts research in medical education. OMED's human resources include a faculty Associate Dean, a faculty Associate Director, an Assistant Director/Administrator and a talented staff of administrative and curricular support personnel.
Office of the Medical Scientist Training Program
The MSTP offers exceptionally talented individuals the opportunity to undertake a physician-scientist training program tailored to their specific research interest. The primary directive is to create future biomedical investigators by providing the highest quality of graduate medical training.
Office of the Physician Scientist Training Program
The PSTP is a 5-year program funded by the School of Medicine. For students who have a clearly defined interest in academic medicine, the PSTP enriches the medical school's curriculum with an additional year of basic science training. Over a period of five years, these individuals acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience to begin careers in some of the most exciting areas of academic medicine.
Office of Student Affairs
The primary mission of the Office of Student Affairs is to provide service and support to medical students to enhance their educational experience and assist their feeling of well-being. Liaison with the student advising system, career counseling, enrichment programs, and the school counselor are examples of these responsibilities. The school registrar is a part of the Student Affairs Office and oversees the official academic records. Credentialing for issues during school, such as enrollment and immunization status, as well as post graduation verification of requirements for licensing and admitting privileges, are handled through the registrar. The dean of students is the head of the office. This is a full-time position, meeting with and supporting students personally or through written communication when necessary. This includes supporting the process of residency application. The office is responsible for assuring that both university and school policies are being complied with, such as the requirement for the student to carry appropriate health insurance. The office oversees standing faculty committees, such as retention and promotions and provides the appropriate liaison between them and the students. Safety and security issues are overseen by the office, which includes appropriate identification for both the university and the health center as well as maintaining images on-line for immediate identification. Support is provided to the very active student organizations by office staff.
